Piano Plus

Piano Plus Stories!

Nancy is an eight month old baby who is visually impaired and participates in music therapy with her mother. Initially, Nancy tended to be passive and unresponsive to her surroundings. After only five sessions, she became more active and engaged in her musical environment. She reaches out to strum the guitar, shakes maracas, beats the drum with her hand and plays on the keyboard. She is also improving her expressive abilities by, for example, vocalizing the sound "mmm" when she wants more music.

Another Story!

From the husband of an older woman with Alzheimer's Disease. Frances had played piano and sung for many years in her church choir. She greatly enjoyed playing the hymns and songs she loved. Danny Boy was also a favorite.

"I wish to thank you for the help you gave my wife. I watched with admiration your patience and skillful teaching. I am sure Frances was greatly helped with your kind and skilled work with her."

Music Therapy Sessions

What Do Music Therapists Do?

After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, music therapists develop a treatment plan with goals and objectives and then provide the indicated treatment. For example, music therapists involve children in singing, listening, moving, playing, and other creative activities which help to develop a child's self-awareness, confidence, readiness skills, coping skills, and social behavior . They explore which styles of music, techniques and instruments are most effective or motivating for each individual child and expand upon the child's natural, spontaneous play in order to address areas of need.

When working with adults, music therapists structure the use of both instrumental and vocal music strategies to improve functioning or facilitate changes that contribute to life quality. They may improvise or compose music with clients, accompany and conduct group music experiences, provide instrument instruction, direct music and movement activities, or structure music listening opportunities. Many adults involved in music therapy experience positive changes in their mood and emotional state, feel a greater sense of control over their lives and develop new creative interests.
